Kentucky blue grass, Bent grass, and Bermuda grass were foliar sprayed with 1000, 2000 ppm 2-chloroethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (ccc, cycocel, chlormequat) and 500, 1000 ppm 2-chloroethyl phosphoric acid (Ethrel, Ethephon). These two chemicals which retard plant height, length of leaf blade and internode elongation, were highly effective in improving the turf qualities. Ethrel was more effective than cycocel in retarding the height in Bent grass and Bermuda grass. These results have the most potential for use in chemical mowing. In this study, Bermuda grass was most tolerant to SO©ü gas, Kentucky blue grass was intermediate, and Bent grass was the most sensitive. Growth retardant treatment reduced the visible injury induced by SO©ü fumigation. Especially Ethrel which retarded growth effectively, also increased tolerance to SO©ü fumigation.
